London has always had warm summers, but what's happened this year has been something else. In May, temperatures hit 35.1°C at Kew Gardens, breaking the record for the hottest May day in UK history. July brought another wave, and with it came burst pipes and supply disruptions that left thousands of homes in east and north west London without running water at the height of the heat.

It's a lot. And it's easy, when you're personally struggling through it, to lose sight of the fact that the wildlife around you is going through exactly the same thing, with far fewer options for relief.

What the heat actually does to urban wildlife

It's worth pausing on this, because it's not dramatic or obvious, it's quiet, gradual, and largely invisible unless you know what to look for.

Birds don't have sweat glands. When it gets this hot, you might notice them sitting with their beaks open, that's panting, their only way of trying to lose heat. They still lose water through their droppings and respiration, and when the puddles and ponds they rely on dry up, there's nowhere for them to rehydrate or keep their feathers in condition.

Bumblebees overheat quickly and struggle to fly far enough to find nectar. Butterfly caterpillars can die during prolonged heat. The soil bakes solid, which means blackbirds and other ground-foraging birds lose access to the worms and insects they feed on. Wild fruits and nuts ripen too early, creating food shortages later in the year just when animals are trying to build up reserves for winter.

Every patch of shade, every dish of water, every overgrown corner becomes genuinely vital when a city gets this hot.

This is the hidden side of a heatwave, the slow disruption running through every food chain, every life cycle, every creature trying to navigate a concrete city with nowhere to cool down.

The good news

Unlike the water infrastructure crisis, or the broader climate picture, this is something we can actually do something about with very little. You don't need a garden. A balcony, a windowsill, a doorstep. Any outdoor space at all.

🌿 SMALL THINGS THAT MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE

💧Put out a shallow dish of water and refresh it daily. Add a few pebbles or stones so insects and bees can perch safely while they drink, and so hedgehogs and frogs can climb in and out without getting stuck. Ceramic or plastic, not metal, it gets too hot in direct sun.

🌿 Leave things a little wild. Resist the urge to cut everything back right now. Unpruned hedges, leaf piles and log piles create damp, shady pockets that invertebrates rely on in this kind of heat.

🦔 If you have hedgehogs visiting and you're seeing them out during the day, that's a sign they're struggling. Wet cat food and a bowl of water left out in the evening goes a long way. No mealworms though, they do more harm than good!

🐸 Top up any pond you have with stored rainwater where possible. Even a washing-up bowl sunk into the soil counts as a refuge for frogs and newts when natural water sources dry up.

🌸 If you can, plant something nectar-rich in a shadier spot. Bees find it hard to forage when it's this hot, and flowers in partial shade stay cooler and more accessible than those in full sun.

We talk a lot about rewilding at a landscape scale, and that matters enormously. But the truth is, when a heatwave hits a city, the most immediate ecological safety net is the one made up of thousands of individual people making small, quiet choices in their own outdoor spaces.

A dish of water on a doorstep. A balcony left a bit overgrown. A garden corner that doesn't get tidied until September. None of it sounds significant on its own. Collectively, it forms a network of refuge across the city that can genuinely help wildlife survive summers like this one.

Prague offers an interesting example of how green and blue spaces can become part of the everyday fabric of a city. Rather than nature existing only in designated parks or on the outskirts, trees, gardens, riverbanks and hillside landscapes weave their way through the urban environment.

For anyone interested in urban rewilding, there are lessons here. Prague shows how even a busy, historic European capital can make space for nature alongside the needs of residents, businesses and millions of visitors.

The Vltava: A Blue-Green Corridor Through the City

The Vltava River is one of Prague’s defining features.

It runs directly through the heart of the city, passing some of its most famous landmarks and dividing neighbourhoods that are connected by a series of bridges. But the river is much more than a scenic backdrop.

Along significant stretches of the Vltava, the river creates valuable open space.

People walk, run and cycle beside the water. Others simply sit on the banks or stop to enjoy the view. Trees and grassy areas soften the edges between the built environment and the river, while riverside paths provide an alternative to navigating the city’s busier streets.

From an urban nature perspective, rivers can play an enormously important role.

They create natural corridors through otherwise densely developed landscapes. Riverbanks and connected green spaces can provide habitats and movement routes for birds, insects and other wildlife, while also helping people feel more connected to the natural environment.

There is something psychologically different about walking beside water, too. The city suddenly feels less enclosed. The skyline opens up, traffic feels more distant and the pace of life seems to slow.

In Prague, the Vltava demonstrates the potential of “blue infrastructure” — using rivers, canals, ponds and other bodies of water as an integral part of how cities function and how people experience them.

A City Shaped by Hills

Prague’s geography also contributes to its distinctive relationship with nature.

Unlike flatter cities, Prague’s hills create different layers of green space. Parks, gardens and wooded areas often sit above the city, providing walking routes, shade and spectacular views across the rooftops and river.

The change in elevation also creates variety.

One moment you can be walking through busy historic streets surrounded by buildings, cafés and tourists. Not long afterwards, you can find yourself climbing through a park or garden where the sounds of the city begin to fade.

These spaces provide something that urban nature does particularly well: contrast.

Nature does not have to dominate a city to have an impact. Sometimes its greatest value comes from creating small moments of escape — a shaded path, a group of mature trees, a patch of grass or a viewpoint surrounded by vegetation.

One thing I have noticed while spending time in Central and Eastern European cities is that there often seems to be a stronger presence of urban nature in everyday surroundings.

This is not necessarily about having more spectacular parks.

Instead, greenery often feels more closely integrated into ordinary streets, residential areas and public spaces.

Prague reflects this well.

Trees appear between historic buildings. Planted areas soften roads and squares. Green spaces sit alongside transport routes. The river creates a continuous natural feature through the centre of the city.

The result is that nature does not always feel like somewhere you have to make a special journey to visit.

It is simply there.

You encounter it while walking to a restaurant, crossing the city, travelling to work or exploring a neighbourhood.

Gardens, balconies and courtyards can become stepping stones for wildlife.

That constant presence of nature completely changes the atmosphere. The air feels fresher, birdsong fills the trees, and wherever you look there are colourful flowers, mature trees and green spaces woven into the streets. It’s easy to underestimate the impact this has, but research consistently shows that spending time around nature can reduce stress, improve mood and support better mental wellbeing. In Wrocław, those benefits don’t feel confined to a visit to the park, they’re part of everyday life.

The Numbers

Before comparing Wrocław with the UK, it’s worth looking at the facts.

Around 35% of Wrocław is made up of green space. The city has 44 official parks covering around 800 hectares, along with five rivers that split into canals and smaller waterways, earning it the nickname “the city of a hundred bridges”.

London is actually greener than many people realise. Public green space accounts for around 20% of the city, but once private gardens, tree canopy, road verges and green roofs are included, that rises to roughly 47%. On paper, London is one of the greenest capital cities in the world.

So this isn’t a case of one city having more green space than the other.

One of the biggest differences is tree cover. Poland has more than double the UK’s forest cover, around 31% compared with 13%, and that difference is noticeable. Even in the middle of Wrocław, trees seem to be everywhere.

It’s not just the parks

This is the part that’s much harder to measure.

In many UK cities, green space is something people travel to. Parks, riversides, gardens etc are wonderful places to spend time, but they’re often destinations.

In Wrocław, greenery is spread throughout the city instead. Behind apartment buildings are leafy courtyards filled with mature trees and plants. Cafés spill out into green outdoor spaces. Balconies are filled with flowers, herbs and vegetables.

The houses stand out too.

The average single-family home in Poland is around 130 m², compared with roughly 76 m² for a new-build home in the UK. But the biggest difference isn’t necessarily the size of the house, it’s the garden. While plot sizes vary, a typical detached home in Poland sits on around 600–800 m² of land, leaving hundreds of square metres for gardens, trees and growing space. Rather than being an afterthought, outdoor space remains an integral part of many Polish homes.

In the UK, gardens are often one of the first things reduced as housing density increases. In Poland, they are an incredibly important part of the home itself.

What the UK could take from this

• Protect gardens when building new homes rather than treating them as optional extras.

• Add more greenery to the spaces between parks, including residential streets, courtyards, shopping areas and public spaces in general.

• Encourage people to grow food at home, whether that’s in a garden, on a balcony or in a window box.

• Prioritise planting and protecting street trees, not just trees within parks.

The UK already has impressive green space statistics, so this isn’t about suggesting it’s getting everything wrong.

What Wrocław demonstrates especially well is how nature can become part of everyday life. Instead of being somewhere people visit, it becomes something they experience without thinking about it. It’s a simple difference, but one that has a very noticeable impact on how a city feels.

Living in London can sometimes make nature feel distant or difficult to access, particularly without a car or a large budget. The Mole Gap Trail is a good reminder that some of the best countryside walks are still relatively close to the city and accessible entirely by public transport. Stretching between Leatherhead and Dorking through the Surrey Hills, the trail offers a mix of woodland, open countryside, riverside paths and farmland, all within an hour of central London.

Yesterday I did the walk myself, starting with the train from Waterloo to Leatherhead which only took 45 minutes. A return ticket cost around £14, making it a relatively affordable day out from London if you want to spend some time outdoors without travelling too far.

After arriving in Leatherhead, I walked through the town centre before joining the trail. One of the best things about the Mole Gap Trail is the variety of landscapes you pass through across the route. Throughout the walk you move between open fields, shaded woodland paths, riverside sections and quieter residential areas, so the scenery changes constantly and the route never really feels repetitive.

There is also a large amount of farmland surrounding the trail, meaning you regularly pass cows, sheep and horses throughout the walk. At points, the trail opens up into wider views across the Surrey Hills before narrowing back into tree-covered paths following the River Mole.

As I went during the heatwave, it was extremely hot for most of the day, but much of the trail is sheltered by trees which made the walk far more manageable than expected. The combination of woodland and riverside sections also meant there was a noticeable amount of wildlife throughout the route. I spotted dragonflies hovering above the riverbanks, butterflies moving through the fields and bees almost constantly along the wildflowers lining parts of the trail.

Around the midway point of the trail, I took a small detour to visit the local skipping rocks spot by the river to cool down, dip my feet in the water and grab an iced coffee before finishing the trail. After walking for hours in the heat, it ended up being one of the best parts of the day! I highly recommend going as its only a 15 minute detour off the trail and after hours of walking in the heat, it was the perfect place to cool down for a while and take a break by the river.

My favourite part of the trip was towards the end of the trail in which you walk through Denbies Wine Estate, the largest vineyard in the UK, which forms part of the trail and is open to the public. The vineyard stretches across the hillsides near Dorking and completely changes the atmosphere of the walk. After spending most of the route moving through woodland and farmland, arriving at the vineyard felt unexpectedly open and Mediterranean in parts, particularly in the heat.

The Mole Gap Trail is around 6.5 miles depending on the route taken and works well as both a casual countryside walk and a longer hiking route. What makes it stand out is the variety packed into a relatively short distance, from woodland and riverside paths to vineyards, farmland and open hills. For anyone in London looking for an affordable and accessible way to spend more time outdoors, it’s definitely a route worth doing.

Living in a city can sometimes make you feel strangely disconnected from the place you actually live in.

We walk the same streets every day, pass the same buildings, rush between work, home and responsibilities, yet often know very little about what is happening around us. So many meaningful community spaces exist quietly in the background, hidden in plain sight.

Recently, I visited St. John’s Church Gardens in Waterloo, and it genuinely made me reflect on how much more involved we should all be in our local neighbourhoods.

What struck me most is that I have lived in this area for years and somehow never knew it existed.

In the middle of one of the busiest parts of London, surrounded by traffic, offices and constant movement, there is this peaceful community-led green space filled with plants, wildlife and people simply taking care of something together.

Why Spaces Like This Matter

Community gardens are about far more than growing flowers or vegetables. They create spaces where people can slow down, connect and contribute to something meaningful within their local area.

At St. John’s Church Gardens, that sense of care and collaboration is everywhere. The garden has become an important public green space in Waterloo, welcoming local residents, commuters, office workers, students and passers-by looking for a moment of calm in the city.

The garden itself is incredibly thoughtful. There are wildlife-friendly areas, species-rich hedges that help reduce pollution, drought-tolerant planting and nectar-rich flowers designed to support pollinators. Hidden amongst the greenery are shaded spaces beneath huge walnut trees, cork oaks grown from seed and a wildlife garden encouraging insects and birds back into the area.

What makes the space feel especially meaningful is how community-focused it is. The garden is maintained by volunteers alongside Community Gardener Santa Pedone, who works with local people and students with special educational needs to help them learn horticultural skills and spend time in nature.

It is not just a garden. It is a place where people gather, learn, volunteer and reconnect with both nature and each other.

During the annual Waterloo Festival, the space also becomes home to exhibitions, tea parties and community events, showing how urban green spaces can support culture

and connection as much as biodiversity.

We Need to Pay More Attention to What Exists Around Us

Visiting this garden made me realise how often we overlook local initiatives because we assume there is “nothing around here” or because we become disconnected from our surroundings through routine.

But community projects are everywhere if we start looking for them!

Small gardens. Volunteer groups. Local clean-up projects. Wildlife initiatives. Neighbourhood events.

These spaces survive because people care enough to show up.

And the truth is, many of them need more support, more awareness and more involvement from local people.

Sometimes getting involved in your community does not need to be something huge or life-changing. It can simply mean spending an hour helping in a garden, attending a local event or taking the time to learn what exists in your own neighbourhood.
