Meanwhile, long-tailed tits have formed their own survival collective, roosting in tight huddles of twenty or more, their combined body heat creating a living furnace against the frost.

Here’s something magical: goldcrests, our smallest birds at just nine centimetres, consume their entire body weight in insects daily during winter. They’re essentially flying metabolic furnaces, burning bright to stay alive. Watch them hovering beneath conifer branches, gleaning invisible prey, and you’re witnessing one of nature’s most precarious balancing acts. They light up LettsSafari parks and gardens in the winter months.

The Night Shift

As dusk settles and your garden takes on that crystalline winter stillness, the real drama begins. Foxes aren’t just scavenging bins; they’re performing an ancient hunting technique called ‘mousing’. They listen for voles beneath the snow, then execute a spectacular pounce, arcing through the air to break through the crust with their front paws. This isn’t learned, it’s genetic choreography, written into fox DNA over millennia.

If you’re exceptionally lucky, you might glimpse Britain’s shyest acrobat: the pine marten. But spare a thought for the hazel dormouse, curled beneath your log pile in a sleep so profound it borders on suspended animation. Their heart rate drops from 350 beats per minute to just 10. They might breathe once every few minutes. For seven months, they’re barely alive, burning fat reserves with the efficiency of the world’s best survivalist. Creating habitat for dormice - leaving bramble patches, planting hazel - is rewilding’s sweetest gift: offering refuge to something small, golden, and impossibly vulnerable.

Even wood mice and bank voles, awake beneath the snow, create elaborate tunnel systems in that secret space between earth and winter blanket, living in what scientists call the ‘subnivean zone’ - a world of consistent temperature and hidden pathways.

The Call of the Wild

The bellowing you hear from September through November isn’t random vocalisation. It’s the sound of the rut, the annual breeding season when male deer compete for the right to mate with females. For stags, this period represents the culmination of an entire year’s worth of energy investment. They’ve grown their antlers, built their body condition, and now they must prove their worth in one of nature’s most demanding contests.

Stand in the position of a red deer stag for a moment. You’ve barely eaten in weeks, your testosterone levels are surging, and you’re surrounded by rivals. Your throat vibrates as you throw back your head and release a roar that carries across the glen, a declaration that reverberates through your entire body. This isn’t just noise, it’s a complex communication tool that tells other males about your size, strength, and determination, while simultaneously advertising your genetic quality to watching hinds.

Two Voices, One Purpose

Britain is fortunate to host two main species of bellowing deer, and their vocal performances are remarkably different. The red deer, our largest native land mammal, produces a deep, guttural roar that can carry for over a mile across open terrain. It’s a bass note that seems to emerge from the earth itself, often developing into a series of roars that increase in intensity as rival stags approach one another.

The fallow deer’s contribution to autumn’s chorus is altogether different. Their groaning belch might lack the majesty of the red deer’s roar, but it’s equally effective. Listen carefully and you’ll hear a rhythmic, rasping sound, almost mechanical, like an old gate creaking in the wind. Fallow bucks produce this during their slightly later rut, which peaks in late October. The sound is lower in pitch than you might expect from a smaller deer, created by air passing through the larynx in a controlled, repetitive pattern. These autumn symphonies represent more than just breeding behaviour. They’re indicators of ecosystem health and the success of rewilding efforts across Britain. Imagine yourself as a subordinate red deer stag, perhaps six years old, watching a mature twelve-year-old master stag patrol his harem. He roars approximately once every minute during peak activity, his breath condensing in the cold morning air, each bellow requiring significant energy expenditure. You edge closer, testing his resolve. His roar changes, becoming more aggressive, shorter, more frequent. His head lowers, antlers pointing toward you. The message is unmistakable.

Here’s something most people don’t realise: the bellowing actually escalates through distinct phases before stags resort to physical fighting. It’s an energy-conservation strategy evolved over millions of years. Most contests are resolved through this vocal sparring, with the weaker or less committed animal withdrawing before antlers clash. When fights do occur, they’re brief but intense, and the roaring continues throughout, each stag attempting to literally push the other backward while maintaining their vocal display. They lock horns to attempt to wrestle the opponent to the ground - not to stab them.

This is the season when red deer bellow across misty moorlands, fieldfares arrive from Scandinavia in chattering flocks, and fungi transform forest floors into otherworldly galleries. For Britain’s wild residents, autumn isn’t about winding down, it’s about preparation, transformation, and in many cases, spectacular displays that rival anything spring can offer. From the hedgehog frantically building up fat reserves to the salmon leaping upstream against all odds, autumn wildlife is wonderfully, urgently alive.

1. Red Deer: The Monarchs of the Rut

October brings the red deer rut, and there’s nothing quite like witnessing a stag roaring across a Scottish glen at dawn. What many don’t realise is that these impressive males lose up to 20% of their body weight during the rut, becoming so fixated on defending their harem and fighting rivals that they barely eat for weeks. Their antlers, shed and regrown annually, can weigh up to 15kg each. Listen carefully and you’ll notice each stag has a slightly different roar - their own vocal signature that females learn to recognise. 2. Grey Seals: Autumn’s Beach Babies

Britain hosts 40% of the world’s grey seal population, and autumn is pupping season. Between September and December, our beaches become nurseries for impossibly cute white-furred pups. Here’s the remarkable bit: pups are born weighing around 14kg and gain approximately 2kg per day on their mother’s milk, which contains 60% fat - five times richer than cow’s milk. Mothers don’t eat at all during the three-week nursing period, losing up to a third of their body weight to give their pup the best possible start.

3. Fieldfares: The Viking Invaders

When fieldfares arrive in autumn from Scandinavia, they bring a taste of the wild north with them. These striking thrushes, larger than their resident cousins, travel in noisy flocks that can number in the thousands. What’s fascinating is their cooperative defence strategy: when threatened by predators, they actually defecate on the attacker, matting feathers and potentially causing fatal loss of insulation or flight ability. They’re also surprisingly brave, mobbing birds of prey that would make other thrushes flee.

4. Hedgehogs: The Race Against Winter

Autumn is absolutely critical for hedgehogs, and here’s why: they need to weigh at least 600g to survive hibernation. Young hedgehogs born in late summer are in a desperate race to bulk up before the cold arrives. A hedgehog’s heart rate drops from 190 beats per minute to just 20 during hibernation, and they can go months without eating. If you spot a small hedgehog out during the day in late autumn, it’s likely in trouble and may need help from a wildlife rescue.

5. Atlantic Salmon: The Ultimate Endurance Athletes

Salmon returning to British rivers in autumn are attempting one of nature’s most extraordinary feats. After years at sea, they navigate back to the exact stream where they were born, sometimes travelling 100 miles upstream. Here’s what’s truly incredible: they don’t eat during their entire freshwater journey, surviving purely on stored reserves while leaping waterfalls and fighting currents. Some lose half their body weight. Most die after spawning, making this quite literally a one-way mission.

6. Tawny Owls: Autumn’s Territory Wars

Autumn nights echo with the hooting of tawny owls re-establishing territories. Young owls born earlier in the year are now being forcibly evicted by their parents, leading to intense vocal disputes. What many don’t know is that tawny owls have completely asymmetrical ear openings, one higher than the other, allowing them to pinpoint prey in total darkness with astonishing accuracy. They can also rotate their heads 270 degrees, though contrary to popular belief, they can’t turn them all the way around.

7. Fungi: The Underground Network Awakens

Autumn’s damp conditions trigger the fruiting of thousands of fungi species, from tiny bonnets to giant puffballs. But the mushroom you see is just the tip of the iceberg, underground, fungal networks called mycelia stretch for miles, connecting trees in what scientists call the “wood wide web.” Some fungi, like the honey fungus, can be thousands of years old and cover vast areas. These networks allow trees to share nutrients and even send chemical warning signals about pest attacks.

8. Jays: The Forest Planters

Jays transform into hyperactive hoarders each autumn, and they’re inadvertent heroes of woodland regeneration. A single jay can cache up to 5,000 acorns in a season, hiding them across their territory for winter food. They don’t find all of them, and those forgotten acorns become oak trees. Jays have incredible spatial memory but also use visual landmarks to relocate their hoards. They’re essentially planting forests, one acorn at a time, driven by nothing more than the urge to survive winter.

9. Migrating Raptors: The Invisible Highway

While many birds arrive in Britain for autumn, others are passing through on their way south. Honey buzzards, ospreys, and marsh harriers follow invisible flyways across the country. What’s remarkable is how young birds, migrating for the first time without parental guidance, somehow know exactly where to go. Scientists believe they use a combination of the Earth’s magnetic field, star patterns, and even smell to navigate. Some ospreys travel 5,000 miles to West Africa, returning to the same nest year after year.

10. Pipistrelle Bats: The Last Feast

Britain’s most common bats are frantically feeding on autumn insects, building up the fat reserves needed for hibernation. Pipistrelles are astonishingly effective hunters, consuming up to 3,000 insects per night using echolocation calls pitched too high for human ears. What’s surprising is that they don’t actually fly south, they hibernate in buildings, trees, or caves right here in Britain, with their heart rate dropping to just 20 beats per minute and their body temperature falling to match their surroundings.

Rewilding Your Patch: Autumn Action for Nature’s Comeback

Autumn is actually the perfect time to start rewilding your garden, balcony, or local community space. The key is working with nature’s rhythms rather than against them.

Leave the leaves. That compulsion to rake up every fallen leaf? Resist it. LettsSafari often reminds us that leaf litter is winter accommodation for countless insects, hedgehogs, and amphibians. Pile leaves in corners, under hedges, or around tree bases - you’re creating wildlife hotels.

Dragonflies are ancient insects with exceptional flight and hunting abilities; they can fly backward, hover, and fly upside down, making them highly accurate predators with a near 360-degree field of vision. They can consume up to 100 mosquitoes a day and spend the majority of their lives in the water as nymphs.

The majority of wild bees are solitary bees, with around 240 species, and they are the main pollinators for crops. These bees don’t live in hives or have queens, but instead build their own nests, often in the ground or in holes in wood. Bumblebees also have the ability to “buzz pollinate,” which is a high-pitched buzz to release pollen from certain flowers. Both bumblebees and solitary bees have unique ways of carrying pollen, such as using pollen baskets on their back legs or specialised hairs.

Wild grass husks are the dry, protective outer layers (botanically known as the lemma and palea) of grass grains. They have multiple functions in nature and various practical uses, ranging from ecological roles in seed biology to applications as an agricultural byproduct. Badger Faces locking horns in LettsSafari’s Dawlish Park, Exeter. Are they friends or foe?

The Badger Face has two types, with opposite colours. The breed has two distinct colour patterns: the Torddu (Welsh for “black belly”) and the Torwen (”white belly”). They are hardy, effective small herbivores. The rare breed’s ancestors can be traced back as far as the 7th century, when they were known by the old name “Defaid Idloes” after Saint Idloes.

Soay herbivores are an ancient breed, famous for their self-shedding fleece, which means they don’t need shearing. They have unique traits like horns on both males and females and are more like goats in behaviour, as they lack a strong flocking instinct and scatter when herded. Self-shedding fleece: Their wool naturally sheds once a year, a process known as “rooing”. They date back to the Iron Age or even the Stone Age.

Capability Brown, the famous British landscape designer, earned his nickname by telling clients their properties had the “capability” for improvement, and his landscapes are famous for their natural, flowing appearance achieved through serpentine lakes, clumps of trees, and the hidden ha-ha ditch. Brown’s style moved away from formal gardens to create an idealised “natural” look, often copying features from picturesque paintings.

Nature here didn’t wait for perfect conditions. It hacked the system. It’s restoration by pragmatism: use what’s broken, make it breathe.

Once a vibrant fishing village, now the scrappy fishermen’s huts boast just 4 working fishing vessels sitting idly on the beach. Some of the huts decaying, some being restored. Now a diverse clattering of new and old.

This is the lesson Dungeness hands to rewilders everywhere: scale is optional; intent is not. You don’t need a headland - just a patch and a plan.

Gravel pits became glittering wetlands. Bitterns boom, marsh harriers quarter, terns stitch white threads over reedbeds. Hares sprint the margins. In winter, wildfowl turn the lagoons into a breathing mosaic.

On the shingle, Derek Jarman, the famous filmmaker wrote a manifesto in plants. Prospect Cottage - black timber, poetry on the walls; a garden spun from flint, driftwood, iron, and hardy natives. Sea kale, santolina, verbascum, poppies.

Jarman created a biodiverse pocket-planet, tuned to drought, salt, and wind, covered in white, gleaming butterfies. Beauty from limits. Ecology as art direction.

Dungeness proves the future isn’t elsewhere - it’s layered onto the present. A windswept, almost post-apocalyptic beach teaching us how to start again. Begin with what you have. Work with the wind. Invite the wild in. Let it scale.

Easter's Wild Side

Did you know that the European hare - often confused with the "Easter bunny" - is actually a keystone species in rewilding projects across Europe? These "Easter hares" aren't delivering candy; they're delivering ecosystem services through their natural grazing patterns that maintain grassland habitats. Talk about multitasking! They're basically the unpaid landscapers of the natural world. No wonder they need a holiday.

"The irony isn't lost on us," says conservation biologist Dr. Emma Thorne. "The very animal we've turned into a chocolate novelty is critical for restoring biodiversity in certain European landscapes. It's like discovering Santa Claus is actually essential for arctic ice formation."

Timing is Everything

Easter's spring timing coincidentally aligns with critical breeding periods for countless species. This has inspired a movement of "quiet zone" Easter celebrations, where communities and church groups time their festivities to minimise disruption to wildlife. Because nothing says "Happy Easter" like respecting a woodcock's mating dance! If you've ever seen a woodcock's dance moves, you'd understand they need all the privacy they can get - those birds have rhythm that would make the Easter Bunny hop with envy.

From Plastic Eggs to Planetary Solutions

The traditional Easter egg hunt is getting an eco-makeover through "seed eggs" - biodegradable egg-shaped containers filled with native wildflower seeds. Plant these little miracles and watch as they transform into micro-habitats for pollinators. Finally, an Easter egg that gives you something better than a sugar crash and chocolate-stained fingers!

"We've distributed over 50,000 seed eggs across urban areas," reports community organiser Wei Chen. "Children love watching their Easter eggs grow into wildflower patches that attract bees and butterflies. It's Easter magic that lasts well beyond Sunday brunch! And unlike chocolate eggs, these don't mysteriously disappear when parents get late-night munchies."

Wild Egg Hunts

In the UK, conservation organisations have brilliantly repurposed Easter as an educational platform about ground-nesting birds whose populations have plummeted due to habitat loss. "Wild egg hunts" teach participants to identify and protect bird nests while connecting ancient fertility symbols to modern conservation needs. It's the only Easter egg hunt where finding nothing is actually a win for conservation.

So this Easter, as you admire that chocolate globe or colourful egg, remember you're holding more than a treat - you're holding a symbol of Earth's remarkable biodiversity and our opportunity to help it thrive. Now that's something worth celebrating.

The entrance to LettsSafari's Dawlish Park always takes people's breath away. A setting that feels as wild and dynamic as the African Bush - even in the depths of winter! A peaceful, yet vibrant haven where all kinds of birds, mammals, butterflies, reptiles and plants can truly get their wild on.

Of course the Devon seaviews are the constant icing on the cake - a sparkling sight around so many corners.

The visitors to LettsSafari's rewilding safari parks comment on how relaxed and playful the animals appear - even the herbivore's that remain within the perimeter fences driving the forces of habitat regeneration. Naturally they are more at home in the wild than anywhere else.

Now that the wild grasses, wildflowers and scrub plants are in full growth mode across the LettsSafari parks our wildlife photographers have been out and about capturing bees and butterflies engaging in their essential work of pollination, illustrating the delicate beauty and profound importance of these small creatures in the natural world.

A bumblebee was captured in the act of pollinating a white cherry blossom. Bumblebees, with their robust bodies and fine hair, are particularly effective at pollinating many wildflowers and grasses. Their importance cannot be overstated, as they help in the reproduction of plants by transferring pollen from one flower to another, leading to the production of seeds and fruits. This process ensures the survival of many plant species, which in turn support a wide variety of other organisms within the ecosystem.

Deep bronze softens the landscape and lights up the horizon as the bracken and ferns start their gradual descent from green to bronze to black: The cycle of time.
