Planting New Trees for Life at LettsSafari
Our annual new tree planting season is nearly over - we take a look.
At LettsSafari, our members are part of the new wave of eco subscription economy participants. Added to tv and music streaming services is now eco-services. The monthly or annual membership goes towards tree planting, releasing and managing wild animals and creating new wild habitats - plus a front row seat at our rewilding safari parks. We take a look at this winter's new tree planting across LettsSafari parks.
In LettsSafari’s Exeter Capability Brown gardens we naturally grow seedlings and saplings using the latest rewilding techniques for planting out in our safari parks over winter when they are about 5 years old. Their parents include cedars, cherries, maple, oak, ash, beech, birch, spruce, cork and more. They come direct from the extraordinary array of rare and ancient native trees that are dominant in our west country park and garden where they are carefully nurtured in a unique and historic place.
The garden’s collection of rare and sometimes unique trees cascade down the hill toward the sea - punctuated with an array of powerful contemporary sculptures that celebrate their existence.
We have added dozens of new 5 year old saplings this winter planted out from the gardens into our parks - including birch, maple, beech, oak and willow.
Every Christmas we use living fir and spruce trees to celebrate which are then planted out into our rewilding safari parks - with protection from the herbivores installed where necessary. Everyone should consider buying living, potted Christmas trees each year to then plant out in gardens and community spaces. If you don’t have your own space that could accommodate a tree of that size many garden centres donate their extra trees to local charities that then plant them in the community. It’s a worthwhile practice so be on the lookout for garden centres that participate .
Next week: Part 2 of our new series about creating your own LettsSafari garden - with some of our computer generated designs.
The ancient trees that surround us today do most of the heavy lifting - each removing more than 1 tonne of carbon. They also provide vital habitats for other plants and wildlife. They store water and clean the air. It is more important than ever to start planting the next generation of giant eco-warriors, restoring broken landscapes and rain forests. Each new tree we plant is a step toward a better future.
And every young tree we plant out at LettsSafari has been supported by our members, turning today's seedlings and saplings into tomorrow's ancient giants - giving us shelter, habitats and carbon off-setting for the future. A nod to our members - present and future.
