Section 3 - Creating Microhabitats for Rewilding

No matter the size of the rewilding project, a successful approach usually mimics the diversity of habitats found in larger wild ecosystems. Even on a small scale, we can create a patchwork of different microhabitats - each providing for various wildlife needs and together forming a resilient mini-ecosystem.

Wild grassland and prairie can be established in very small spaces

LettsSafari’s model emphasises the three essential habitat types of classical rewilding - woodland, scrub, and wild grassland - and adds water as a critical fourth element in smaller spaces. By incorporating some version of each, even tiny rewilded plots can support a wide range of species. In section 3, we’ll discuss how to create and manage key microhabitats: prairie-style wild grasslands, open scrubland, woodland (tree and shrub areas), and waterways or wetlands. We’ll also highlight the ecological benefits each brings and practical tips for establishing them on a modest scale.

Wild Grasslands and “Prairie” Patches

Wild grassland is the foundation of many rewilding projects. In small-scale settings, this often takes the form of a meadow-like area - an open, sunny patch dominated by native grasses and studded with wildflowers. You might hear terms like “prairie-style” planting or “mini meadow.”

“The idea is similar: to emulate natural grassland ecosystems that are incredibly rich in flora and fauna.”
