Just behind Tate Modern, surrounded by the busy streets of Bankside, you’ll find the Tate Modern Community Garden.
Created in 2006, the garden was developed with Tate Modern and Bankside Open Spaces Trust (BOST) to create a shared green space for local residents. It includes flower beds, fruit trees, herbs, a wildlife pond and a labyrinth, providing space for both people and wildlife.
What makes the garden interesting is how much it fits into such a small urban space. In an area dominated by buildings, tourists and busy streets, it provides a quieter place where people can garden, volunteer and spend time outdoors.
The garden is looked after by local volunteers, with activities including planting, gardening and wildlife projects. It shows how even small community-led spaces can contribute to biodiversity and make cities feel a little greener.
